I had no plan for Costa Rica, just 3 weeks and around $400 to do whatever I felt like doing. I decided this day to make an attempt to travel down all the way to Panama. I heard about these islands called Bocas del toro.
Well, I started out in Monteverde, which is in the northeast part of the country. The border crossing to Panama en route to Bocas was down in the southeastern part of the country, the Caribbean side. I know, I don't always make the most rational decisions. I decided not to try to go all the way but to try to make it Puerto Viejo, which is near the border. The plan would have worked better if I would have been more aware of the huge holiday going on, Semana Santa, which is Holy Week around Easter. In Costa Rica this is a big deal. I took the public bus for like 2 dollars from Monteverde to San Jose, and San Jose is where I encountered problems.

A number of people have commented that the forum has disappeared from Puerto Viejo Satellite and they missed it. Sorry to all you fans but I had to remove it.
The forum unfortunately kept getting attacked by spammers and the forum software made it very laborious to delete these spammers. I tried making it harder to register and then people had trouble getting registered but the spammers still found their way through. So with all the hassles…that was the end of it.

On Wednesday, the court in Limon released the suspect who has accused of the murder of Carlos Navarro, known locally as Rulos.
The suspect, identified in the latest La Nación article by last name Lewis (but previously referred to by last name Mitchell) was initially ordered held in preventative detention for three months by a Bribri judge. Anyone been here to spend a weekend? in late June? We're thinking of leaving San Jose on a Saturday morning...staying just two nights. Possibly Cariblue Hotel. Mom, Dad, teenage daughter...like walking on the beach, birding, interesting wildlife, good scenery, good food. Can just chill and read good books too.
I really recommend going towards Manzanillo, you can rent bikes, the road is lovely and calm. The earlier you leave the more of wildlife spottings you'll have.Oh yeah, we love riding bikes to Manzanillo and Puerto Viejo both. Just ride with a partner and I'd avoid it at night. We found Azania a good location to walk up the road to Totem Restaurant which was quite good--Italian, I think. Also, La Pecora Nera is excellent--also Italiano.

On the eastern most Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, the small surfing and hippy town of Puerto Viejo exists. I found it to be not too touristy here, but that was probably because it was low season. As opposed to the drunken centre of Bocas de Toro, the vibe we got here was very chilled out and easy going. We were told by another traveler that about a month earlier during Easter, the streets were crowded with people from San Jose, resulting in late night stabbings and drunken brawls. Lucky for us, we didn't find this out until we were somewhere else. Anyways, the beaches here are extremely beautiful, not to mention they had some pretty big surf. The only problem with the surf was, like pretty much everywhere else we surfed on this trip, the breaks were mainly shories. Jason had a few good sessions on the many palm fringed beaches along the south coast of town, while I sat on the beach in

hi.i plan to arrive san jose with my wife for 5 nights on july 1. i want to rent a 4x4 and drive to various places. can you recommend a trip for me? want to see both forests and beaches in this short time.
If you are to stay in CR only 5 nights, you may wanna check the South Caribbean Coast. There you can find very nice beaches (Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, Manzanillo, Punta Cocles) and very ancient forests. You can get a guided jungle tour (daytime or at night) in Reserva Natural La Ceiba. The trees you will observe there are amazing.
We did it last week and felt very happy after de trek. we repeat at night ot see amphibians and the sounds of the jungle at night (different than during the day). All the package were arranged by the couple managing La Kukula Lodge, a brand new ecolodge in Playa Chiquita.

A Guide for the budget traveler to Costa Rica

Due to its increasing popularity as a vacation destination, Costa Rica cannot be considered cheap anymore. However if you’re a budget traveler or a backpacker, do not let this deter you from traveling to Costa Rica – it is still a wonderful place. To make your funds last longer (and to stay within your budget), I suggest that you become more like a Tico (a Costa Rican) – avoid the most popular and most Americanized beach resorts and tourist traps – Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo, Flamingo Beach, Arenal and the like – and by all means patronize some of the local sodas and cafes when dining. You will save a lot of monies. Even though I haven’t been to Cahuita and Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean Coast in many years, I believe you’ll still find relatively affordable accommodations there as well.
Most travelers will spend at least 1-2 nights or more in San Jose, Costa Rica’s Capital C

Costa Rica may be one of the more Internet-covered destinations I've ever come across. Most of these sites are generated by the voluminous in-country expat community, including detailed sites for practically every area you'd be interested in visiting; more than a few are operated by local realtors and tour operators. Following is a selection of a half-dozen of the foremost sites in English covering both the whole country; once you've identified what areas you'll be visiting within the country, also check out more locally focused (and often even more useful) sites such as Arenal.net, Greencoast.com (for Puerto Viejo/Cahuita/Talamanca coast), MonteverdeInfo.com, MontezumaBeach.com, SamaraBeach.com and Tamarindo.com.

With Torres out, the youngster Muñoz made it all the way to the Open final heat, won it, and grabbed the 2008-2009 Costa Rica National Costa Rica Surf Championship title. The win was culmination of a hat-trick for Muñoz, as the surfer from Esterillos also won the Championship titles for the Junior and Boys categories as well.
The situation in the Open was that Torres needed to reach at least 5th place in this date to earn the national title, but in his semifinal heat, the surfer couldn’t find the waves, and came in 4th place. With Torres situated at 7th in the Gran Finals Terraza – Reef, this opened a window for Jaco’s Jairo Pérez and Muñoz to fight for the championship with the points earned with the 6 stars of the date.

My wife and I just returned from Costa Rica from a very nice vacation. While there It made me think, we live in a great country, freedom, not too many bars on the windows. I visited a local health clinic in a small village in the Caribbean called Puerto Viejo. There was no line up outside, no one waiting for care. I wondered why? I work as a flight nurse in Montana and our ER gets bound up with patients who have sprained ankles, abrasions, minor falls, etc. Some are there because they were in a small fender bender who when they call their insurance company. They say go get checked out, so you can't sue us later. I am thoroughly amazed at what we use an er for? Please excuse the french. We are a lazy bunch of pansies. You wonder why our system is failing? Wake up America. Read, educate your selves. We are not entitled to anything. What made our country great? Signe

“We're thinking about renting a car,” Roberto said. I replied enthusiastically, sharing their thought that that way, even if the road blockage did last into the evening, they could squeak through, making it to their destination (which I learned was the party town south of Cahuita called Puerto Viejo) before the night was through. “Where are you going?” Roberto asked me, to which I responded “Cahuita,” inspiring a puzzled, European frown. I explained the relative locations of my and their destinations, and they asked if I would like to come along.
The taxi driver that had followed me from my initial arrival seemed to be content with my realization that he was telling the truth about the road being closed. I thanked him for his advice, and told him that if I decided I needed a taxi for something, I would let him know. He reminded me that the demonstration may last into the ev
