A backpacker guide to Costa Rica (Sarasota Herald Tribune)

A Rastafarian influence hangs heavy in this area, home to the famously good hostel, Rocking J's. For $6, guests can rock to sleep in one of the supersized hammocks packed together in a big, open-air dorm room.
Still, Puerto Viejo, for all its beach views and surf spots, didn't quite fit my image of the perfect un-touristy spot -- too much division between the locals and the tourists.
During my stay, a group of locals jumped two backpackers walking back to Rocking J's from a bar. The duo sprinted away with their money intact, but one, a junior from the University of Colorado, returned with a deep gash on his cheek and scratches along his sides.
With my optimism slightly bruised, I proceeded next to La Fortuna and nearby Monteverde, nestled side-by-side in the tall mountains at the center of the country.

Volunteering in Costa Rica A Life Changing Experience (Costa Rica Travel News)

A First Person Account of a Recent Volunteer Trip to the Caribbean of Costa Rica.
Before going to Costa Rica, I was searching for a new life experience. I thought that maybe volunteering for people in need would help me to reach this objective. I couldn’t make up my mind right away and spent a lot of time thinking about the destination and what kind of volunteering I wanted to do. This is an important point to consider. You cannot decide any random volunteer abroad program online without having a specific goal. Choosing Costa Rica met my goals of wanting to discover a new culture, a new language and the natural beauty of the country.
Once I made up my mind on the destination, I had to find an organized program that met my expectations. I chose a non-profit organization rather than a ‘voluncation’ travel agency because I thought they would be closer to the local people

If you are staying at a hotel or lodge near rainforest excursions, they will often have boots for you to use. If not, you can buy boots here really cheap - they are everywhere - just plain black rubber boots. If you are going for a long hike, I would not recommend wearing new boots, however. If you have hiked in other wet countries, you know what to expect. Many people just wear comfortable sneakers, realizing they will get wet. You really cannot keep your feet dry - with rubber boots, you feet are wet from sweat! It is true here also that after a heavy rain, there will usually be a break for you to dry out. Of course, if you have a problem with your feet already, you will want to be extra careful. Maybe extra socks? Extra small towel? Things like that. I would not recommend bringing heavy boots or hiking boots. If you are concerned about your body getting wet, you can bring a small pon

Costa Rica Dolphin tour in Gandoca National Park

Just wondering if anyone has tried this diving and snorkeling tour on the Caribbean coast near the Panama border?
Is there any chance of not just watching the dolphins, but actually getting out of the boat and snorkeling or diving with them? Found it on website of Isla Inn in Cahuita:
Dolphin watching and snorkeling. Take a beautiful ride along the coast past Manzanillo deep into the Gandoca National park. Near the Panamanian border, atlantic and bottlenose dolphins come in to feed in the brackish waters near the Sixaola river. After seeing the dolphins, we cruise back to Mona island for snorkelling and/or diving! Then we continue back up the coast to Punta Uva for our second dive and second snorkelling site.

I am in the midst of planning a trip to Puerto Viejo for the week of Thanksgiving. The person that was going with me cannot go. I still want to go. Is it a safe place for a single woman to be? Also, can anyone recommend a hotel-the closer to beach the better.

Cahuita and the Limon province of Costa Rica, have a special flavor to them. The Caribbean area offers a natural and cultural environment that is completely different from the rest of the country. Coconut trees leaning towards the ocean, spectacular reefs, the sounds of Bob Marley and Alpha Blondie, and tourists wearing dreadlocks and Birkenstocks abound in this area. Even if you’re not the Rasta type, you shouldn’t miss out on the natural beauty of the forest and reefs of Cahuita.

Costa Rica New Traffic Laws Take Effect September

Driving in Costa Rica is like; "dangerous", "insane", "crazy", etc., etc., etc. It appears even Costa Rica's President agrees as he is quoted as likening Costa Ricans to 'Dr. Jekyl and Mr .Hyde', in reference to the widespread recklessness encountered on the roadways of a nation recognized for peace and natural beauty.
It came as no surprise then, when Presidente Oscar Arias supported the passage of a sweeping reform to the Costa Rica traffic laws (Ley de Transito) that intends to rectify the situation by force, and as rapidly as possible.
As of September 23rd, 2009 Costa Rica will put all drivers and the new traffic law system, to the test! The cornerstone of the new reform is the computerization of drivers’ license records, and the use of a

I Left My Crackpipe in Puerto Viejo Costa Rica

And I did. The next morning, after a thrilling single night’s stopover at Costa Rica Backpackers, a hostel well fortified as a crack and hooker-proof enclave downtown, I took an eight dollar bus to Puerto Viejo, the main tourist town on the Caribbean coast. The trip took about four hours and included a hurried piss stop in Limon, a city gringos such as myself mostly just piss in and head, pun half intended, on out of. We also stopped briefly in Cahuita, a serene town that my ex-boyfriend said would be perfect for me and therefor had been excluded from my travel plans.
And Puerto Viejo seemed as decent a place as any…stepping off the bus I was actually delighted by the bustling village, which is inhabited by a bizarre admixture of European and North American Land of Manana (sorry, no enyay accent) expats, black Caribbeans who speak a brand of pidgen English, your standard Ti

As the howls of spider monkeys echoed around our forested cabin, I tried to open my eyes – only to find that they were crusted shut. “This is not good,” I called out to Don, who was doing a scorpion check of the bathroom. He came out, his eyes red around the rims. “Great, I have it too,” he groused. “There’s no way we’re going to be able to pass this off.”
We were in Tortuguero- a national park on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast that gave new meaning to remote. We had taken two buses and a two-hour boat ride down jungle-lined canals to get here, mostly so we could witness the spectacle of giant sea turtles nesting on the beach at night. Returning early to San Jose was not an option.
But there were others in our group to consider. At dinner the night before, a British surfer girl had voiced suspicions about my condition, known as highly contagious to anyone who has
