(Photo) This is an Ungaliophis panamensis that was found near cocles, Costa Rica. According to published reports there were only a few documented sitings of this animal in Costa Rica, although the locals I talked to seemed to have seen them before, so not sure how rare they are in the country. This is one of the species we are negotiating with the government to work with. you can learn more about our project at:

'Are you sure there aren't any crocodiles in this river?" "Pretty sure. At least that's what the taxi driver said." "It wasn't nearly this deep when we crossed the first time." Earlier in the day, we had taken a jeep-taxi from the small town of Smara, Costa Rica, to nearby Playa Buena Vista. Since coming to Costa Rica, I've had a lot of great surfing experiences. I've seen guys ride the infamous Salsa Brava, a deadly reef break in Puerto Viejo and the biggest wave in the country. I've tried my best on some six- to eight-foot waves in Playa Hermosa, and learned that I'm not ready for them. ...

Anyway. We left San Jose in high spirits, excited about the onward journey to a teeny Caribbean town called Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The bus ride was about 4 hours long and it took us through the mountains that run down the middle of Costa Rica. The next day me and some other people from the group got a bus to another little village called Manzanillo, and spent the day hiking through the jungle there. Our guide was a massive Rasta called Ricky. He grew up in puerto Viejo and knows everything about everything in the jungle - he made a splint and a sling out of a banana plant! I saw various animals, including a fucking massive jumping spider. I didnt like that.

So we left Puerto Viejo, to make our way to Tortuguero - the only way to get there is by a 3 hour boat ride. During the boat ride, we saw the most amazing animals - Caiman, Spider Monkeys, Whit
They say that money isn't everything, and the New Economics Foundation (NEF) is out to prove it. In their Happy Planet Index Report 2.0, released on July 4, Latin American and Caribbean nations grabbed nine of the top ten slots for happiest nations in the world. Costa Rica topped the list, followed by the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Guatemala, and Vietnam. The United States came in 114th. African nations with extreme poverty and war scored lowest, while developed nations fell towards the middle of the index, due mostly to greater ecological footprints and decreasing life satisfaction....

I dunno who wrote the two reviews above, but I'm gonna differ strongly. We stayed in Cahuita and Punta Uva (south of Puerto Viejo about 15 minutes) in January and found an array of very pretty quite clean beaches. No hassling vendors....the occasional dog (I never saw the "packs of stray dogs". Dark sand north of PV, pale sand farther south and up around Cahuita. the only place I saw much of any trash on the beach is north of Cahuita where driftwood has washed up in piles, but the beach itself was lovely, dark sand, we were there on a sunday "family" day and it was packed with kids, then on monday it was almost abandoned. We only got in the water in cahuita, Punta Uva, Manzanillo and playa chocles and found them all to be easy in and out and not a lot of pulling current. The surf beaches are certainly not for snorkeling or water play but the beaches are still nice.

We were planning a trip to the Pacific side of Costa Rica in September or October however, I have noticed some resorts are closed during these months. I assume do to rain. Is this a bad time to visit? Should I stick with the Guanacaste area or Carribean side?

September and October are absolutely great on the Caribbean side, the ocean is calm and clear and generally no rain. There are however no big resorts on this side of the country, no high rise or golf courts either. But we do have beautiful beaches, rainforest, nice places to stay and good restaurants...

Trying to give you any advice based on the weather during the month of August is hard...very hard...
My little ones love Manuel Antonio...but also love the low profile of the beaches around Puerto Viejo, Punta Uva, Cocles, Manzanillo...Peace Lodge is partially open...Simple answer I will rather go to Caribbean side...Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in PARADISE!

You know, I just went with my son to Cahuita a little while ago. He's 5 and we found a bunch of things to do that he loved. They have the sloth center, a huge hit for kids. Amazing beaches, and since it's their drier season, you might have a lot less rain and more fun time at the beach....
Costa Rica in 8 days.... 5 on the Carribean coast staying in chilled out Cahuita - beach, snorkelling, zip lining, horse riding, mucho cocktails, sloths, sleeping and food poisoning. A crazy day rafting (with the food poisoning.. nice) followed by a couple of days chillaxing at the foot of Arenal volcano - wicked! (60 Photos)
I stayed at Totem in late March and really enjoyed it. My choice had come down to Totem or Azania or Cariblue. I went with Totem primarily because of the sea/beach view. Azania and Cariblue are very close to the beach, but no view of the water. The view and sound of the crashing waves from the 2nd floor beach suite was fantastic. Decent rooms, very big, good food and nice people. One of my great memories of the trip is the morning breakfast, not so much for the food (although it was ok to good) but more for the fact I could grab a coffee in the restaurant and wander across the road to stand on the deserted beach. Nice way to slowly wake up. Stayed at Azania a year ago... my wife and I and another couple loved it. It had a decent, attractive pretty pool and great simple but fresh breakfasts (fruit, eggs, etc). It is a jungle setting and a 2 minute walk to Cocles Beach (same beach as Tot
Costa Rica is the greenest and happiest country in the world, according to a new list that ranks nations by combining measures of their ecological footprint with the happiness of their citizens.

Costa Ricans top the list because they report the highest life satisfaction in the world, they live slightly longer than Americans, yet have an ecological footprint that is less than a quarter the size. The country only narrowly fails to achieve the goal of what NEF calls "one-planet living": consuming its fair share of the Earth's natural resources....
