After getting off the boat from Tortuguero we jumped in Wesley and made our way over to the East coast and South to Puerto Viejo. We pulled into Puerto Viejo pretty late at night and found a great little place to camp on the beach next to a hostel. That night we went out for pizza and some amazing fruit shakes before tucking in for the night.

The next day we got up early and did a little shopping in town. We had a few presents to pick up and had a nice time exploring the roadside stands. After Devin did a little work we headed to the beach for some swimming and sun. The beach was beautiful with clear water and many palm trees dotting the beach. Following the bright sunshine we took a little walk down the beach to Rocking J's. Rocking J's is an intriguing hostel that has mosaics everywhere and was definitely designed with an artist eye. Devin and I taught Bev Mexican Train Dominoes while we indulged in a pitcher to Tico Tea… a local beverage made with Rum and many juices. Afterwards we headed back to the van to make spaghetti. Devin and I then went to a local joint to listen to some live music, they were very talented and one of the guys even played a ukulele.

The next day we shopped around for some snorkeling gear and ended up getting a great deal on some equipment. So we all took turns snorkeling out in the clear water. Although there wasn't much to see the beach was beautiful and it was a great day!

We headed to a new town just a little North of Puerto Viejo, so that we could get up...

8 Vote(s)

So we stayed two nights in the tree house ... amazing! We cooked our meals, played epic frisbee on our private beach, napped in the hammocks etc ... BUT, after the 2nd night in the mosquito netting and the VERY REAL sounds of the jungle srrounding us, we wondered what it might be like to stay at the 5 star resort we'd passed up the street (pretty sure the only one on this coast). So we headed to the internet cafe, snagged a decent rate on Expedia, packed up and headed to Le Cameleon .... all I can say is "WOW". From the cool drinks they handed us at check in, to the amazing rooms (all white, but they change the color scheme everyday ... when we checked in our room was black and red, today it's yellow and green ... they even change the pictures on the wall! And the lights in the room fade in and out, every color of the rainbow. We feel very comfortable here!

5 Vote(s)

Costa Rica is one of Central America's most popular tourist destinations. However, a vast majority of the country's tourism buzz comes from its West Coast. Resorts dot the Pacific coastline of this long, thin country. People could be forgiven for thinking that Costa Rica doesn't even have a Caribbean coast.

One of these alternatives to the West Coast is Puerto Viejo, a laid-back (some might label it charming) village with all the trappings of a great resort area: a picturesque collection of beaches lined with lush rainforest, airy restaurants and bars, and - best of all - reasonable prices on hotels.
In addition to beaches, Puerto Viejo also has adopted some...

9 Vote(s)

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. Right... rant warning. I've always had a strange desire to test myself by being washed up on a desert island, but I fear that my skills at survival would be no match for a lack of will. ..As I walked along a trail I recognised several fruit trees, taro roots (which are a great form of jungle carbs but need to be cooked or they will poison you), and a couple of useful trees for making bows or shelters. But I couldn't stretch out the work-dodging for ever, and I needed to rush back to the toilet again anyway! I've completely lost my appetite and fear I insulted Selina by not eating her lunch burritos. After that I had to lay down and felt so weak I couldn't bring myself to leave my bed. And it was raining heavily. And the dogs had had diarrhoea all over the porch. And the cat had puked on the sofa. And I ran out fags the day before yesterday. Considered a 3 hour trek through the mountainous snake-infested rainforest with a machete to the shop but thought that might be admitting addiction. I remained hidden under my mosquito net while Selina cleaned up the various soils.

18 Vote(s)

We were going to rent bikes and explore for waterfalls but, to our dismay, were met with torrential rain this afternoon, so most of us spent our afternoons either sleeping or reading in hammocks, which really, I cannot complain about....

9 Vote(s)

Rob and I had a break from teaching last week when Dave and Becka came to visit. We decided to go to the Caribbean coast since we'd only ever been to the Pacific, so we chose Puerto Viejo. It was a good choice. The only part of the Puerto Viejo trip I would change is our decision to stay at Rocking J's hostel. It wasn't the worst hostel I've ever stayed in, but it was close.

How about some good? …Cocles beach near Puerto Viejo is one of the nicest beaches I've been to in Costa Rica. The sand is white, the water is blue, the sky is clear, and the waves are tall. What more could anyone ask for? We spent most of our days at Cocles - in between rounds of eating, of course.
After a few days in PV, Dave, Becka, Rob and I moved on to Arenal Volcano and La Fortuna (the town right outside it). It took about 4 hours in a minivan to get us there from PV, but it was worth it. Though it rained almost non-stop while we were there, and though we only saw the volcano clearly once or twice, La Fortuna was great....

12 Vote(s)

We traveled to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, quite close to Panama, to the pueblo of Puerto Viejo, south of Limon. In many ways, it was hard to tell which country we were in. There is a mix of indigenous, Afro-Caribbean, and Costa Rican cultures and populations, with people speaking Spanish, Creole, English, and various mixes. Stores accept dollars and colones with equal ease. The food was different, a bit more spice and kick to it, which was welcomed by all. We stayed in tropical bungalows in the midst of the wettest forest I've ever visited; I can't imagine that anything or anyone is ever completely dry here. The rains were truly torrential, lasting 12-15 hours, drumming our rooftops all night, and we awoke to five inches or so of water covering the forest floor. When the rains let up, the sun came out, and we experienced 95 degree weather with 90% humidity, enough to make even the most ...

13 Vote(s)

This wonderful beach town on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica holds many surprises. With its laid back attitude and Caribbean life style, you can be assured of a relaxing Costa Rican holiday. Naturally, for those of us who like a more active holiday, Puerto Viejo has it all. Long walks on pristine beaches, experiencing exotic flora and fauna in a wildlife refuge, snorkeling or diving among the many reefs in our crystal clear waters, world-class surfing, mountain biking, kayaking and cultural visits to indigenous peoples.

To see some of the Country's most beautiful beaches, just head east from Puerto Viejo towards Panama. Somewhere in between you'll find magestic places like Manzanillo and Punta Uva. ride a bike to the west and you'll find the small town of Cahuita, which even has it's own rum distillery, making a delicious coconut flavored rum that makes Malibu taste like bleach. From Puerto Viejo, it's just a short day trip to Bocas Del Toro on the Caribbean side, which is booming from what was a kind of backpackers secret spot, to a newly found luxury destination and spring break spot....

11 Vote(s)

The food here is so fresh and flavorful...I haven't had a meal, smoothie or other drink that I haven't liked! The breakfasts here are very good - nothing like fresh eggs and fruit from this verdant place. Gallo Pinto is what they call a typical Costa Rican breakfast - eggs, rice and beans, fresh fruit. There are variations at different restaurants and "Soda's" - a Soda is a small outdoor local eating place with a simple menu.

And the coffee.....they say here that Juan Valdez of Columbia drinks Costa Rican coffee! I have had a Mojito - the best ever, and a Pina Colada that was superb. Okay well maybe two. Most of the time, I receive the plate of food and forget to photograph the delectable delights. But fortunately, I remembered to get the camera out a few times. (photos)

16 Vote(s)

We started construction only two weeks ago on the kitchen and office - which are being topped off this week- an incredible speed for a caribbean beach town. We drove to the port city of Puerto Limon friday to get some tiles at El Mundo de la Ceramica (world of tiles) and found the tile for the kitchen and bathrooms. They had every tacky tile you have ever seen in the world and of course with the perfect boarder to boot! Yes, here is where you find what will not sell anywhere else. Well after the salesman showed us the "BEST" we wondered through every stack and pile and found some pretty interesting stuff, for the floors some large tiles that look like concrete and the kitchen walls a off white with satin finish and for the bathroom walls a tile that kinda looks like bamboo streaks in a very light off green tint, it all came together pretty nice and we all felt the satisfying feeling of accomplishment while driving back that afternoon.

10 Vote(s)

Three of the reported rapes were this year, said the Limón judicial director.

Agents believe they know who the rapist is, said a judicial official Wednesday. But the one case that may have enough evidence for a conviction, hasn't even gotten the suspect in preventative detention.
Whenever anyone writes about Costa Rica they're usually referring to the west coast or the string of volcanoes. But I reckon the best place in Costa Rica is the little publicized Caribbean coast-untouched by mass tourism, no big resorts or group tourism, beaches that rival anything the 'traditional Caribbean' has to offer-and all without a hefty price tag.…

I know-I live here! Puerto Viejo de Talamanca is a charming village stuffed with great restaurants, atmospheric bars, spectacular beaches and huge tracts of pristine rainforest. Whoever wants an affordable holiday with everything the Caribbean rainforest and coast have to offer will find it here…waking to howler monkeys, spotting toucans from your breakfast table, surfing, swimming, snorkelling in azure seas dotted with fishing pelicans, sloths sleeping on branches, morpho butterflies fluttering past…and so the list goes on. This is Nature in big letters!

5 Vote(s)

On the eastern most Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, the small surfing and hippy town of Puerto Viejo exists. I found it to be not too touristy here, but that was probably because it was low season. As opposed to the drunken centre of Bocas de Toro, the vibe we got here was very chilled out and easy going. We were told by another traveler that about a month earlier during Easter, the streets were crowded with people from San Jose, resulting in late night stabbings and drunken brawls. Lucky for us, we didn't find this out until we were somewhere else. Anyways, the beaches here are extremely beautiful, not to mention they had some pretty big surf. The only problem with the surf was, like pretty much everywhere else we surfed on this trip, the breaks were mainly shories. Jason had a few good sessions on the many palm fringed beaches along the south coast of town, while I sat on the beach in envy. I would say that Puerto Viejo set a great first impression of Costa Rica, and I would say this lovely little town definitely deserves a revisit.

8 Vote(s)

Mom, Dad, teenage daughter...like walking on the beach, birding, interesting wildlife, good scenery, good food. Can just chill and read good books too.

I really recommend going towards Manzanillo, you can rent bikes, the road is lovely and calm. The earlier you leave the more of wildlife spottings you'll have.Oh yeah, we love riding bikes to Manzanillo and Puerto Viejo both. Just ride with a partner and I'd avoid it at night. We found Azania a good location to walk up the road to Totem Restaurant which was quite good--Italian, I think.
I had no plan for Costa Rica, just 3 weeks and around $400 to do whatever I felt like doing. I decided this day to make an attempt to travel down all the way to Panama. I heard about these islands called Bocas del toro.

Well, I started out in Monteverde, which is in the northeast part of the country. The border crossing to Panama en route to Bocas was down in the southeastern part of the country, the Caribbean side. I know, I don't always make the most rational decisions. I decided not to try to go all the way but to try to make it Puerto Viejo, which is near the border. The plan would have worked better if I would have been more aware of the huge holiday going on, Semana Santa, which is Holy Week around Easter. In Costa Rica this is a big deal. I took the public bus for like 2 dollars from Monteverde to San Jose, and San Jose is where I encountered problems.

12 Vote(s)
