A total of 41 African immigrants, some of them professionals, who risked their lives crossing the Atlantic in search of a better life, found themselves detained in Costa Rica on Friday waiting to be accepted as refugees so they can get a fresh start.
This is a phenomenon repeated more and more often in countries like Colombia, Panama, Nicaragua and Costa Rica, which the authorities of those countries attribute to people-trafficking rings that promise to take undocumented migrants to the United States or Canada, only to leave them stranded on these tropical coasts.
Costa Rican authorities believe that these 41 Africans were brought here by traffickers to whom some paid as much as $7,500, while defenders of human rights recall that they come from areas shattered by wars and conflicts.
The Ethiopian "D.G." arrived on June 25 in Costa Rica on a boat from Venezuela, he told Efe. He and three other Africans came ashore in the Caribbean province of Limon, at the end of a week when authorities found 28 other Africans stranded in different parts of the country.

17 Vote(s)

We had to leave much of our luggage behind at the hotel as there was a weight limit on the boats that would take us to Tortuguero and as we checked them in we wondered whether we would ever see them again.
If you are staying at a hotel or lodge near rainforest excursions, they will often have boots for you to use. If not, you can buy boots here really cheap - they are everywhere - just plain black rubber boots. If you are going for a long hike, I would not recommend wearing new boots, however. If you have hiked in other wet countries, you know what to expect. Many people just wear comfortable sneakers, realizing they will get wet. You really cannot keep your feet dry - with rubber boots, you feet are wet from sweat! It is true here also that after a heavy rain, there will usually be a break for you to dry out. Of course, if you have a problem with your feet already, you will want to be extra careful. Maybe extra socks? Extra small towel? Things like that. I would not recommend bringing heavy boots or hiking boots. If you are concerned about your body getting wet, you can bring a small poncho in a pouch but I wouldn't bother with rain pants -- too hot if you are walking a lot. Most Costa Ricans just don't worry about it -- they get wet and then they get dry. You probably have a rain cover for your backpack and that will work well.

13 Vote(s)

Mountain properties in Costa Rica with its warm and pleasant climate is fast becoming one of the most sought after places for people to retire in and to buy a second home in. private homes are also in demand in this place as most people are attracted to the affordable prices which can get them a much larger home than what they would be able to get in their own countries.

Buying mountain properties in Costa Rica is mainly among the three ranges which create 5 areas which are the Tropical lowlands, the Northwest Peninsula and the Central Plains in the north, the coastal areas along the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean and the Central Valley. The Central Valley is where most people reside. This being the most densely populated area most of the activities take place here while the remaining areas are for farms, holiday homes, resorts and some industries.

18 Vote(s)

Travelling around the diverse landscapes of this Central American country is easier than ever. Costa Rica is a small place with "a bewildering variety of landscapes", says Will Pavia in the Times. And thanks to a new minibus network in the Central American country, travelling between these diverse regions is now both cheap and easy.

The cloud forest that grows over the country's "mountainous spine" is astonishing in its "natural abundance": at a café on the edge of the Monteverde reserve, seven or more species of hummingbird can regularly be seen squabbling over the syrup feeders. From there it's a "magical journey" through "luminous green foothills" to the barren volcanic landscape of Irazu.

And no less enchanting are the vast, pristine beaches of the Caribbean coast, a relaxing final destination for most visitors.

11 Vote(s)

by Randy Berg - Land on the Beach in Costa Rica is in demand and real estate sales in these areas have increased enormously. Central America can boast of the beaches of Costa Rica as this is one of the greatest treasures of this country. Visitors who come to Costa Rica end up buying properties here and even settle down in this beautiful picturesque nation. Most would love to own one of the properties on these exquisite beaches and this is what has created a great demand for beach properties.

Costa Rica has one of the most wonderful coast lines and this is also the biggest treasure of this nation. The dual coastlines run alongside the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. This does offer a lot of land on the beach in Costa Rica. However, looking at the cost factor it is only for those who can afford the price.

16 Vote(s)

Anyway. We left San Jose in high spirits, excited about the onward journey to a teeny Caribbean town called Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The bus ride was about 4 hours long and it took us through the mountains that run down the middle of Costa Rica. The next day me and some other people from the group got a bus to another little village called Manzanillo, and spent the day hiking through the jungle there. Our guide was a massive Rasta called Ricky. He grew up in puerto Viejo and knows everything about everything in the jungle - he made a splint and a sling out of a banana plant! I saw various animals, including a fucking massive jumping spider. I didnt like that.

So we left Puerto Viejo, to make our way to Tortuguero - the only way to get there is by a 3 hour boat ride. During the boat ride, we saw the most amazing animals - Caiman, Spider Monkeys, White Faced Monkeys, Howler Monkeys (which, incidentally are the scariest things to wake up to in the middle of the night!)...

9 Vote(s)

I found out yesterday that I am actually getting picked up by my Scout conference organizers on Sunday, not Monday like I had thought/planned, so today was really my only day for any sight-seeing in Costa Rica. I'm very happy with the one day I had, though! I think I saw everything I came to this country to see! Through my hostel, I booked a tour with Tom's Jungle Safari to Tortuguera National Park. At the time, I had no idea what or where that park was. I just went up to the front desk and said "I want to go into the jungle. What do you recommend?" and they pointed me in this direction. Turns out, Tortuguera is supposed to be the most remote part of Costa Rica. It is only accessible by boat and contains the one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in the
Howler Monkeys.

There was a two-toed sloth up there, too.Western Hemisphere. Also, it's on the Caribbean Coast! I never planned on getting to either coast during my time here, just because it seemed like quite a journey. In reality, though, it was only about 4 hours each way by bus, plus we got to drive through the cloud forest, which was quite neat. ...

5 Vote(s)

Costa Rica's southern Caribbean coast was one of the last regions to become connected to the rest of the country. It was only in 1987 that the first paved road linked the regional capital of Limon to San Jose meaning that for most of the country's history, the Afro-Caribbean east coast communities developed in almost complete isolation from the rest of Hispanic Costa Rica. Despite recent investments in roads and transport services, Costa Rica's Caribbean coast still feels separate and distant, almost like having two countries rolled into one.But there's a lot more to Puerto Viejo than music, partying and surfing. A slight detour to Punto Uva brought me out onto an almost deserted beach where white sands met turquoise blue water: a beach scene that was almost too cliched to believe.

17 Vote(s)

I love the Rain
Seriously, there isn't anything more relaxing then listening to the rain. In my post "Why Costa Rica" I spoke about how the weather here is 75 degrees every month on average. There is also two seasons, "dry season" and "green season". Where I live, close to Heredia, the weather is pretty nice and 75 is about right. By the beaches it can get really hot and that is why I like it here better.

During the rain season, or green season, you can expect to have a beautiful sunny morning until around noon time and then the clouds roll in and there are few storms.
