The first thing we saw upon arriving in Cahuita was this guy selling ... Cahuita National Park. So on one side of the trail, you see this. Welcome to Batch 2 of the Costa Rica pics! On one of our days in Puerto Viejo, we did a day trip to Cahuita National Park. It's a trail that runs along a rainforest that skirts the ocean, so you kind of weave in and out in between the beach and the rainforest. Here we are boarding the bus.
Cahuita is a one road village south of Puerto Limon on the Caribbean coast. A town past built from afro-caribbean settlers arriving from Jamaica, the people hold strong to their roots through Jah, Rastafarianism and of course the obligatory herb of choice!

I was hoping for another Montezuma, a chilled out happy town that I could feel safe in even when walking alone after sun down. Cahuita had the same easy laid back attitude but with an air of menace lying just below the surface. Too much rum & Imperial written into the faces of men taking their post dinner positions under the bus stop. The local dealer like a drowsy wasp in the height of the British summer (ahh the irony, summer and Britain in the same analogy!), ready to plant his sting on a low life backpacker.
However the above could well be blamed on the backpacking traveller hoping to obtain cheap drugs and Cahuita's reputation as a "free love" town, visiting females determined to make a bee line for the local males.
I dunno who wrote the two reviews above, but I'm gonna differ strongly. We stayed in Cahuita and Punta Uva (south of Puerto Viejo about 15 minutes) in January and found an array of very pretty quite clean beaches. No hassling vendors....the occasional dog (I never saw the "packs of stray dogs". Dark sand north of PV, pale sand farther south and up around Cahuita. the only place I saw much of any trash on the beach is north of Cahuita where driftwood has washed up in piles, but the beach itself was lovely, dark sand, we were there on a sunday "family" day and it was packed with kids, then on monday it was almost abandoned. We only got in the water in cahuita, Punta Uva, Manzanillo and playa chocles and found them all to be easy in and out and not a lot of pulling current. The surf beaches are certainly not for snorkeling or water play but the beaches are still nice.

Please don't let these two reviews stop your investigation of the Puerto viejo area. We fell in love with the area last Jan and are going back in October. You may have to look a bit to find the perfect beach for your group, but there's a good selection and (except for scuba diving which is probably gonna suck in Jan/Feb...it did when we were there in Jan) there's a ton of beach and nature stuff to see and do. If you wanna pm me, I can let you know where we stayed, what beaches we've been to before and how PV area compared....

15 Vote(s)

But you can visit the restaurant and see many of the babies and Buttercup (the first sloth rescued) for free. Or you can do a simplified tour (just the sloths) for less. Definitely recommend it. I highly recommend the sloth sanctuary. Please read my travel blog on the web costaricalearn

Go to search box top right on the first page and type sloth refuge. Also the category is: national parks and wildlife refuges, and you can also find it that way. You will find a very informative article all about it.
Yesterday we left San Jose for Cahuita, on the Caribbean coast, known for its hippy laid back vibe and afro Caribbean community, possible due to the fact that all the locals are immigrants from the Caribbean, Jamaica mainly. It had been advertised as not for everyone and certainly not paradise, and not on the 'Gringo Trail' so I thought I would love it. Unfortunately Cahuita is also on the 'Stuck-up Wanker Backpacker Trail'© (yes, I have coined and copy written that phrase) and I really don't like it at all. I've been to some amazing places where both the locals and tourists are so friendly and easy going (Koh Lanta) and I've been to some places where everyone (especially 'lifers'... Those that have been around for at least a month and view the place as their own backyard, getting extremely pissed off that you are in their line of sight and possibly breathing the same air as them... often found in dank dorm rooms) could not be any less pleased that you are there, and use rudeness and unfriendliness to show you just how much they wish you weren't there.

Also Cahuita is FULL of faltpackers© (Faux alternative backpackers... you know the type... want to go to somewhere different but then once they're there, are internally terrified that that perhaps one of the local rasta's will rape them or some such nonsense, so they walk around not talking to ANYONE and just glaring at you and blowing smoke in your face), and the town is a bit seedy so we'll leave tomorrow for Puerto Viejo, maybe we'll win that gamble. Such is travel I suppose...

13 Vote(s)

The humidity has been building around us, night skies are filled with lightning and thunder rumbles in the distance, but not more than a drop of rain has fallen in the now two weeks I've been here. The rest of Costa Rica has had wild storms and deluges - the one night we went half an hour down the coast to Puerto Viejo to go dancing where it was pouring - but it remains dry and hot and steamy in Roberto's piece of jungle paradise.

The country is waiting in anticipation of a big earthquake on the Pacific side and last night the Caribbean coast of Honduras suffered a significant earthquake. One never knows what one will be dealing with here in the tropics - it isn't all pretty.

11 Vote(s)

We arrived in Bocas del Torro (a Caribbean island off Panama) after a painless journey around lunchtime. Once we had settled ourselves into our hostel and reacquainted ourselves with the German couple whom we had befriended in El Castillo we headed to Wizard Beach. Like Cahuita, the Caribbean culture dictates that most things are in English as well as or sometimes instead of Spanish. The local Caribbeans here speak a dialect akin to Patwa although it often seems to be injected with some Spanish as well.

We were a little surprised to find that Wizard beach (the nearest beach) was nearly an hour's treck through muddy jungle and were very ready for a swim by the time we got there. It was spectacularly beautiful however, surrounded by jungle with white sands and deep blue water broken up by the white crested colossal waves. We spent a while playing around in the surf, took a stroll down the beach and found ourselves a boat home to avoid a treck back through the jungle in the ...

12 Vote(s)

We didn't spend long in Costa Rica, rightfully concerned about the cost. At the border we bought our most expensive breakfast and bus ticket yet. This took us to San Jose where we walked for the best part of an hour in circles with our big bags, looking for the bus station. We arrived just in time to miss our bus.

Luckily we only had to wait two hours for the next bus to the Caribbean coastal town of Cahuita and passed the time easily eating the sandwiches we had made in San Juan del Sur and playing numerous games Gin Rummy. The bus journey itself went smoothly. When we arrived however, everything seemed to be closed. Eventually (after several hours of touring the town with an ageing Rasta, seeing a giant coral snake up close and being offered copious amounts of weed) James found us a great hostel, ‘The Secret Garden'. It was complete luxury compared to what we had been used to. A large immaculate family room with marble floors, comfortable beds, French doors leading out to the garden, en suite shower and toilet and large fluffy towels. We were even accompanied by a large crab although James Surfin' efficiently ushered it out while I stood on the bed pretending to be of use. ...

20 Vote(s)

For some reason is hard to get someone to share a van with, God knows i've tried. Make sure you have other travel options too. I love the public bus, inexpensive and best drivers in CR.

11 Vote(s)

After almost 2 years of (very fun) world travel, we're still looking for our paradise. In the Dominican Republic now and flying to Costa Rica in July. In looking at photos, I'm wondering if there are ANY beaches in CR that have white sand, turquoise water and calmish water -- Caribbean-like seeing as how part of it is ON the Caribbean.

I've heard CR is just fabulous, but maybe not the beaches? If any of you CR afficianados can point us in the right direction to these idyllic-type beaches, let me know. Otherwise, maybe we'll do a quick tour just to see it and head to Panama or Roatan, since our real goal here is to find a place to relocate that is our kind of paradise.

Lightest sand beach on Pacific is Playa Conchal and Isla Tortuga, with Playa Garza/Nosora area pretty light tan, but none of them white, and all the water is more green. On the Caribe side, Playa Cahuita at the refuge, and also Playa Manzanillo at the Gonduca refuge, both you have to trek or kayak to.

14 Vote(s)

Unless things have greatly improved, last time I was there, it was Dial Up and the electricity was spotty, as its located at the end of the electic grid/phone grid, that was 2005. Laptops are a target for theft as well.

There are internet cafes but the service is slowwwwwwww. This is a party place and can be a tad nuts and a young euro backpacker, and Pt Viejo is a rather dodgy place at night and a heavy element of drug users are commiting random acts of violence and robbery against male tourist....no reports lately, but just so you have been warned, get the lowdown on rules of safety once there, and head the advice. Desolate beaches and roads are a risk on that coast.

just spoke with a buddy of mine who was in PV this past March and was robbed at knifepoint early in the morning on the road outside the hostel. He didn't have his wallet with him and just lost some loose bills, but the knife is a scary thing

12 Vote(s)

I had several such experiences in rapid succession while visiting a wildlife sanctuary in Costa Rica. Aviarios del Caribe, located near Cahuita on the Caribbean coast, is a sloth rehabilitation center. Sloths that are injured or orphaned are brought here and cared for, and then-if they're able to fend for themselves-released back into the rain forest. A volunteer had patiently explained many of the differences between two-toed and three-toed sloths, about which more later. But as I was watching a baby two-toed sloth, I noticed with some puzzlement that it actually had three toes on each foot. Clearly there was an interesting story here, but that was just the beginning of the strange and wonderful things I was to discover about sloths.

Sloths' slow, graceful movements have been compared to those of a t'ai chi master. I agree with that assessment-and coincidentally it was for a t'ai chi retreat that I went to Costa Rica in the first place. But sloths have also been called "ugly," and here I must disagree. Up close, sloths are actually quite cute, and the shape of their faces gives the impression of a permanent smile. In the wild, of course, the menagerie of plants and critters growing in the fur can be off-putting, but a well-groomed sloth is-and I'm speaking from experience here-downright cuddly.

12 Vote(s)
