Elena and I are in Puerto Viejo. The town is beautiful. It's much more laidback and relaxed than any of the places we've been spending time in. Well, actually, the farm was pretty laidback and relaxed. But Puerto Viejo is more laidback and relaxed in a different way. In a beach way.

How we got here:

In case we failed to mention, the hostel we were sitting is kind of on a hill. Rather, it's at the base of the tallest mountain in Costa Rica, Chirripo. It's also in the middle of the country. No, Costa Rica isn't a huge country, but it takes some time to navigate due to it's drastic topography and primative roadways. Because of this, we left the hostel early in the morning to hike down to the bus stop. This small jaunt took 20 minutes with everything we own on our backs, down steep, rocky road. Then we hopped on the bus.

Buses in Costa Rica are terrifying. As a passanger, you sit quietly in your seat (praying to yourself, perhaps) and try not to put your foot through the floor while you're jamming on an imaginary brake pedal. Enormous 60 passanger buses are packed with 80 people, and the

14 Vote(s)

I was at Waimea Bay today, where the water..Everyone takes the bus pretty much everywhere in Costa Rica, and we arrived too late to catch one from San Jose to Puerto Viejo, so we woke up and caught the 6 am bus. This is a shot of the Costa Rican rain forest in the morning.

And finally, we arrived! The first person we encountered was this girl who worked at a tourist info booth. The guy with her is a local, Dexter. The Eastern coast has a really really Caribbean influence ... lots of Caribbean folks, food, and music. Jahhh...

8 Vote(s)

And I did. The next morning, after a thrilling single night's stopover at Costa Rica Backpackers, a hostel well fortified as a crack and hooker-proof enclave downtown, I took an eight dollar bus to Puerto Viejo, the main tourist town on the Caribbean coast. The trip took about four hours and included a hurried piss stop in Limon, a city gringos such as myself mostly just piss in and head, pun half intended, on out of. We also stopped briefly in Cahuita, a serene town that my ex-boyfriend said would be perfect for me and therefor had been excluded from my travel plans.

And Puerto Viejo seemed as decent a place as any…stepping off the bus I was actually delighted by the bustling village, which is inhabited by a bizarre admixture of European and North American Land of Manana (sorry, no enyay accent) expats, black Caribbeans who speak a brand of pidgen English, your standard Ticos (Hispanic Costa Ricans), and BriBri natives (I haven't met one but that's the rumor).

20 Vote(s)

This trip was very last-minute for us. A friend had this trip planned and when her travel buddy backed out at the last-minute she sent us an invite. How could we say, no? Plus, I never do things last-minute so when I do, I feel proud of myself. So off we went, Carla, Reese, Doug and I to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica to a small town called, Puerto Viejo near the Panama border. The town was quite unique, attracting residents from all over Europe, Africa and the Caribbean. The accommodations were simple and clean. The highlight being the hammocks on the deck and the host dogs, Ozzie and Elvis. The low-light being, no hot water, zip zilch zero.

13 Vote(s)

It is a bit of apples to oranges as they are definitely different places. Puerto Viejo is less developed and would would be ideal for more adventurous type travelers who are looking to really experience tropical jungle/beach type of environment.

Accommodation on Caribbean side tends to be a bit more rustic and less North Americanized, For some that is great... But for others, that is a total drawback. As for cultures, the Caribbean has quite a bit more diversity in types of people that live there then Manuel Antonio.

As far as beaches go... Caribbean is basically one long beach which stretches from Panama to Nicaragua. The beaches south of Puerto Viejo tend to be most popular with their whiter sand colour.
If you looking for a total "sun vacation", Puerto Viejo or Caribbean side would not be for you. Then again, you might rethink Costa Rica as your choice as rain is responsible for all its lush environment that many people came to experience.

Cost wise, Yes, Caribbean will be cheaper, but not a huge amount. It is easy to do all desired activities in Caribbean side without a car which would save a huge amount of $....

6 Vote(s)

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca (not to be confused with Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí in the northern lowlands) is a decidedly Caribbean concoction of perfect beaches, spectacular surfing and laid-back attitude, spiced up with the most happening music, nightlife and restaurant scene on the coast. It's touristy - and more and more expats are moving here every year. But if you can let go of getting in touch with ‘the real Costa Rica' for a moment, you'll have a blast.

As throughout the southern Caribbean coast, the Afro-Caribbean presence is strong here: locals sometimes refer to the town by its patois name ‘Walaba,' and coconut-scented odors and reggae music emanate from the doorways. With the influx of foreigners, however, you might hear German or French on the streets sooner than patois. Puerto Viejo's kitchens are now turning out fantastic fusion cuisine, incorporating influences from Mexico, Italy and China. Music lovers are mixing up their play lists with salsa, hip-hop and rock and roll. Some might claim the ‘authentic' Caribbean flavor is diluted; but others argue it is enhanced.

6 Vote(s)

Experienced world travelers will no doubt point out that I didn't pick the cheapest of the cheap beach locales for this compilation of top budget beach vacations. After all, why not include Goa, India; Mombasa, Kenya; Lombok, Indonesia; Koh Phi Phi, Thailand; or Nha Trang, Vietnam? I agree, you can usually find a hut on the beach at those destinations for less than ten bucks a day; however, take into account the cost of a long flight and the luxury of time that most travelers don't have and it turns into a much pricier endeavor. So, for practical purposes, I've limited my choices to the best budget beach vacations in North and Central America, with a special shout out to Brazil. Now you have no excuse not to lather on the lotion and throw down your beach towel.

6. Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica
Let the affluent spend gobs of money on the Pacific coast at familiar resorts like the Marriott and Four Seasons, while travelers in the know follow the surfers to the Caribbean coast of this Central American country. At Puerto Viejo, you can walk on deserted beaches all the way south to Panama. The town has a laid-back, international appeal, with top-notch South American, Costa Rican, and Italian food. South of town, there are a number of bungalow-laden lodgings within easy walking distance to the beach, where rooms rarely exceed $75 a night. Check out La Costa de Papito or Playa Chiquita Lodge.

1 Vote(s)

It is hard for me to deal without a/c...but in Puerto Viejo area...if the rooms offer a good fan it...We are planning a two week stay in Costa Rica for 2010. Places we will be visiting include Monteverde, Arenal, and the Osa. Three nights of this trip are planned for the Caribbean coast. My ideal beach stay would be on a secluded beach in a cabin or bungalow type lodging, clear blue water, gentle surf, beautiful landscape, amazing ocean views and friendly hosts. An example of the "feel" I want the lodging to offer would be something similar to Banana Azul. I haven't located many reviews covering the month of February so I would appreciate any help you can offer to determine if we Texans would be comfortable or absolutely miserable without air conditioning. I am mostly concerned about the evenings for sleeping. I hate to risk the experience of an unforgetable location for a/c and then determine that it wasn't necessary after all.

Temperature wise, the days are hot (90's) and the nights are mild (70's). I have stayed down in Puerto Viejo in January and March, but not February (though I do not think that there is much difference). As long as there is high ceilings and adequate ventilation (which Banana Azul has), you should be fine. Azania Bungalows is another good affordable option down there.

18 Vote(s)

The plan was supposed to be: head to a town by the name of Puerto Viejo at 6 in the morning Saturday the 27th. Easy enough right? No. The interesting thing about the Costa Rican bus system is that yes, it will take you to where you need to go, however, you never actually know when you get there. So long story short, I found myself in a small town by the name of Cahuita.

Moving on from Cahuita wasn't so tough, because I had been wanting to go to Panama for quite some time. So we jumped on a bus an headed down to Sixuola.

16 Vote(s)

I thought that was a bargain!

By budget, we meant something under a grand. We just want an officiant and that's it.

My bad, I would possibly check with the hotel, alot of times they offer deals.
I stayed at Totem in late March and really enjoyed it. My choice had come down to Totem or Azania or Cariblue. I went with Totem primarily because of the sea/beach view. Azania and Cariblue are very close to the beach, but no view of the water. The view and sound of the crashing waves from the 2nd floor beach suite was fantastic. Decent rooms, very big, good food and nice people. One of my great memories of the trip is the morning breakfast, not so much for the food (although it was ok to good) but more for the fact I could grab a coffee in the restaurant and wander across the road to stand on the deserted beach. Nice way to slowly wake up. Stayed at Azania a year ago... my wife and I and another couple loved it. It had a decent, attractive pretty pool and great simple but fresh breakfasts (fruit, eggs, etc). It is a jungle setting and a 2 minute walk to Cocles Beach (same beach as Totem). Totem isn't on the beach either... it is directly across the road. I'd say Azania is definitely more romantic if that's your gig, while Totem a little more lively.

Azania...simple...but nice...my choice! Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in PARADISE!

15 Vote(s)

Alto Katsi is a small, remote community in the mountains of Talamanca, Costa Rica. There are about 16 houses and approximately 80 people. I had the pleasure and priveledge of visiting this community with another volunteer, Chiara Nardi, during the early part of May.

The purpose for the trip was to disperse medicines and vitamins to animals. I had been given a donation by family friends to spend during my internship here and chose to spend part towards animals after speaking with a few people here about how it could best be used. In communities such as Alto Katsi, where people and their animals live in close proximity, animal health is important. Healthy animals mean healthy people.

So, the supplies were collected at the vetrinarian in Bribri, our bags were packed and off we went…let the adventure begin! ...

5 Vote(s)

Though Costa Rica is known for many of its great tourism specialties there is one that should never be overlooked: surfing.

There are also cool surf towns popping up in Jaco, Tamarindo and Puerto Viejo. The best waves occur in the rainy season (Northern Hemisphere 'summer') on the pacific side, and in the hot dry season ('winter') on the Caribbean - so you'll always be able to find a good break.

Why is Costa Rica called 'The Hawaii of the Central America"? Costa Rica's appeal is easy to understand: Consistent surf year-round, Warm water, Easy access to thousands of breaks, Surf conditions from mild to mind-blowing, Surf camps and international tournaments, Affordable prices...

5 Vote(s)

Avid surfers, drawn to the famous Salsa Brava waves, have made Puerto Viejo a hotspot on the surfing circuit. We traveled with our host "mom" Flor and a friend of hers by bus over the mountain range and down to the coast, the bus trip took about 5 hours with no bathroom break or a/c, in true Costa Rican style. Aram did surprisingly well.

One of the things that continues to amaze us about this country is how incredibly diverse the ecology and culture is in such a small geographic region. Most of the mountains we've passed through in the past have been heavily terraced and filled with agriculture. The mountains to the south-west of San Jose are instead totally forested. The coast has a significantly different ethnographic makeup, having been settled by people of African/Caribbean descent. You hear a lot more english and a local patois of english, spanish, and french. The food is typically spicier and utilizes a lot of coconut. We loved the beaches and the environment out at Puerto Viejo and nearby Manzanillo. We spent ...

16 Vote(s)

My room has two twin beds, ceiling fan amd a mosquito net. Really the only problem I had was that the pillow smelled SO BAD, as did the scratchy towels - like mildew - that I couldn't use them. It has since been rememdied, but it was not a good start to my trip herre after traveling so far and long. One thing I did enjoy during my night of restlessness, was lightening and rolling thunder off in the distance, mixed in with the night time jungle sounds. I have no idea what animal was making what sounds either. But it was very....primitive. It's amazing to see what a big difference they have made in the last few years, but there is still so much more they want to do, to help out. The people are so thankful for everything Tropical Adventures is doing for them and they are so happy to see them. That's when I realized: Wow they are doing a great job and I can be a part of it for a few months.

Before working for Tropical Adventures I always wanted to volunteer, but I never really go the idea of paying for it. Why spend so much money, when you just want to help. There is actually a pretty simple explanation, well for Tropical Adventures there is. How can you help people when you don't have the resources to do it? How can you take care of volunteers when you don't have the money to do that? How can you make sure everything is taken care of and volunteers have an amazing and unforgettable experience, without money? What can you do when a volunteer gets sick or something happens and you don't have money? How can you make sure there is always someone around to take care of the volunteers, when you don't have money to pay them?
One of the best ways to save money while traveling around Costa Rica is to camp out. Believe it or not, there aren't a lot of hostels that allow camping. A number of hostels that's it on the beach may allow you to camp, but might not give you all the security you would receive if you were staying in a dorm or room. Whatever you do, do not camp out on the beach alone. While it is legal in Costa Rica to camp on the beach for free, it is also extremely dangerous and stupid. Do you your self a favor and find a hostel that allows camping. below are some of our favorites.

Chauita National Park
One of the few national parks in Costa Rica that allows camping, this one is set along an enviable stretch of white sand beach. Choose from hiking in the tropical forest or snorkeling and SCUBA diving in the rich marine environment. Established in 1978, the park is also known for an abundance of birds and wildlife, especially toucans and white faced monkeys. Location: the camping area is 4 miles past the town of Chauita, south of San Jose.

17 Vote(s)

But Puerto Viejo, on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica is certainly a place that is my 'individualism' town of choice. aybe it was the landscape. Undeveloped beaches overhung with branches of almond trees. Mountains in the background without any visible buildings. The main road running alongside the shore so that you could just park your bike and jump into the water on the spur of the moment.

The place if full of 'misfits.' People who have found themselves to be really out of sync with the values of much of the rest of the world but feel at home here. There is a little community of cowboy style outlaws on the north of the town but I didn't really want to get too close.

8 Vote(s)

I don't really understand it myself, but it is none of my business, so that is okay.

I fell in the river for the first time today.
