The Central American nation, whose name is Spanish for “rich coast,” has protected about 27 percent of its territory in the form of 24 national parks or nature reserves. In 2008 it ranked first in the Americas and fifth in the world on the Environmental Performance Index, a gauge for quantifying a nation’s environmental policies.
As an ecological tie-in, the purpose of my visit was to explore Selva Verde (Spanish for “green jungle”), one of Costa Rica’s first rain forest resorts with an ecology educational component.

So this was to be home for the next 6 weeks, or so I had originally planned! The camp is set amongst trees of Banana, Papaya, Avocado Limes and I would have previously put here Pineapple, but I have since learned that Pineapples grow from the ground. Although the readiness of these fruits are scarce, most have been over picked they still all add to the tropical atmosphere. The Atlantic Ocean fronting the camp is known for fierce rip tides and high swells, unfortunately that all means that the black, volcanic sand beach is littered from the jungle to the shore line in drift wood, and occasional whole Palm Trees that had been swept from a distant island somewhere in the Caribbean.

We didn’t spend long in Costa Rica, rightfully concerned about the cost. At the border we bought our most expensive breakfast and bus ticket yet. This took us to San Jose where we walked for the best part of an hour in circles with our big bags, looking for the bus station. We arrived just in time to miss our bus.
Luckily we only had to wait two hours for the next bus to the Caribbean coastal town of Cahuita and passed the time easily eating the sandwiches we had made in San Juan del Sur and playing numerous games Gin Rummy. The bus journey itself went smoothly. When we arrived however, everything seemed to be closed. Eventually (after several hours of touring the town with an ageing Rasta, seeing a giant coral snake up close and being offered copious amounts of weed) James found us a great hostel, ‘The Secret Garden’. It was complete luxury compared to what we had been us

We arrived in Bocas del Torro (a Caribbean island off Panama) after a painless journey around lunchtime. Once we had settled ourselves into our hostel and reacquainted ourselves with the German couple whom we had befriended in El Castillo we headed to Wizard Beach. Like Cahuita, the Caribbean culture dictates that most things are in English as well as or sometimes instead of Spanish. The local Caribbeans here speak a dialect akin to Patwa although it often seems to be injected with some Spanish as well.

On the eastern most Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, the small surfing and hippy town of Puerto Viejo exists. I found it to be not too touristy here, but that was probably because it was low season. As opposed to the drunken centre of Bocas de Toro, the vibe we got here was very chilled out and easy going. We were told by another traveler that about a month earlier during Easter, the streets were crowded with people from San Jose, resulting in late night stabbings and drunken brawls. Lucky for us, we didn't find this out until we were somewhere else. Anyways, the beaches here are extremely beautiful, not to mention they had some pretty big surf. The only problem with the surf was, like pretty much everywhere else we surfed on this trip, the breaks were mainly shories. Due to its increasing popularity as a vacation destination, Costa Rica cannot be considered cheap anymore. However if you’re a budget traveler or a backpacker, do not let this deter you from traveling to Costa Rica – it is still a wonderful place. To make your funds last longer (and to stay within your budget), I suggest that you become more like a Tico (a Costa Rican) – avoid the most popular and most Americanized beach resorts and tourist traps – Manuel Antonio, Tamarindo, Flamingo Beach, Arenal and the like – and by all means patronize some of the local sodas and cafes when dining. You will save a lot of monies. Even though I haven’t been to Cahuita and Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean Coast in many years, I believe you’ll still find relatively affordable accommodations there as well.

We've told you about Banana Azul and Aguas Claras, a couple of gems straddling the rasta-hippie enclave of Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica's south Caribbean Coast. I just got back from a week in this tropical paradise, where the jungle-backed beaches are the real draw. Here's the lowdown on the four best beaches, all within a rented-bike ride of Puerto Viejo.
Playa Negra is a peaceful expanse of black sand that curls from Cahuita National Park south into Puerto Viejo. The farther north you stray from town, the more deserted the beach gets; you won't have to hike to far to find your own patch of sand. Best of all, the palm trees fringing the length of Playa Negra are perfectly spaced for hammocks. Banana Azul, which is tucked into the jungle between Puerto Viejo and Cahuita, rents them out or you can pick up one on the cheap from the vendors along Puerto Viejo's main drag.

hi.i plan to arrive san jose with my wife for 5 nights on july 1. i want to rent a 4x4 and drive to various places. can you recommend a trip for me? want to see both forests and beaches in this short time.
If you are to stay in CR only 5 nights, you may wanna check the South Caribbean Coast. There you can find very nice beaches (Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, Manzanillo, Punta Cocles) and very ancient forests.You can get a guided jungle tour (daytime or at night) in Reserva Natural La Ceiba. The trees you will observe there are amazing.
We did it last week and felt very happy after de trek. we repeat at night ot see amphibians and the sounds of the jungle at night (different than during the day). All the package were arranged by the couple managing La Kukula Lodge, a brand new ecolodge in Playa Chiquita.

The journey from the Pacific to the Caribbean coast was long as arduous. The air conditioning was apparently on the blink, and the humidity was oppressive. My pounding head and dry mouth suggested that my earlier vodka cocktail, which seemed like a marvelous idea at the time, was perhaps not such a wise idea. Hot tears stung my eyes as I remembered my safe, comfortable bed inside my air conditioned home back in Charleston. I longingly envisioned myself chasing two extra strength ibuprofen tablets with a large glass of ice water, then soothing my aching and sweaty body with a hot shower and cool aloe moisturizer and settling beneath my crisp cotton sheets for eight hours of blissful, uninterrupted slumber.
