A few suggestions for lodging - Pachamama in Punta Uva and Banana Azul in Puerto Viejo. Both in similar, moderate, price range.
You would probably want to plan more than a night or two in Arenal. It's quite a drive...I'm not sure how long the trip would be, but I think it would take over 5 hours to get there from the Puerto Viejo area.
Maybe consider spending 5 nights on the Caribbean side, then 3 in Arenal. There is a rafting trip offered through Exploradores Outdoors that will provide you transportation to/from Puerto Viejo and Arenal before and after your rafting trip. So, you could start the trip on the coast, then they would pick you up at your hotel, go rafting, then drop you off in Arenal. It's $99 per person, including the transportation. Just a thought.

We've told you about Banana Azul and Aguas Claras, a couple of gems straddling the rasta-hippie enclave of Puerto Viejo on Costa Rica's south Caribbean Coast. I just got back from a week in this tropical paradise, where the jungle-backed beaches are the real draw. Here's the lowdown on the four best beaches, all within a rented-bike ride of Puerto Viejo.
Playa Negra is a peaceful expanse of black sand that curls from Cahuita National Park south into Puerto Viejo. The farther north you stray from town, the more deserted the beach gets; you won't have to hike to far to find your own patch of sand. Best of all, the palm trees fringing the length of Playa Negra are perfectly spaced for hammocks. Banana Azul, which is tucked into the jungle between Puerto Viejo and Cahuita, rents them out or you can pick up one on the cheap from the vendors along Puerto Viejo's main drag.

After almost 2 years of (very fun) world travel, we're still looking for our paradise. In the Dominican Republic now and flying to Costa Rica in July. In looking at photos, I'm wondering if there are ANY beaches in CR that have white sand, turquoise water and calmish water -- Caribbean-like seeing as how part of it is ON the Caribbean.
I've heard CR is just fabulous, but maybe not the beaches? If any of you CR afficianados can point us in the right direction to these idyllic-type beaches, let me know. Otherwise, maybe we'll do a quick tour just to see it and head to Panama or Roatan, since our real goal here is to find a place to relocate that is our kind of paradise.
Lightest sand beach on Pacific is Playa Conchal and Isla Tortuga, with Playa Garza/Nosora area pretty light tan, but none of them white, and all the water is more green. On the Caribe side, Playa
