A First Person Account of a Recent Volunteer Trip to the Caribbean of Costa Rica.
Before going to Costa Rica, I was searching for a new life experience. I thought that maybe volunteering for people in need would help me to reach this objective. I couldn’t make up my mind right away and spent a lot of time thinking about the destination and what kind of volunteering I wanted to do. This is an important point to consider. You cannot decide any random volunteer abroad program online without having a specific goal. Choosing Costa Rica met my goals of wanting to discover a new culture, a new language and the natural beauty of the country.

Once I made up my mind on the destination, I had to find an organized program that met my expectations. I chose a non-profit organization rather than a ‘voluncation’ travel agency because I thought they would be closer to the local people
The law is of great interest to the many ex-pats from North America and Europe who make their homes in the Puerto Viejo area as well as to the even greater number of Central American migrants from Nicaragua and other places. ...
Investigators have busted a vendor at the artisan’s market in Puerto Viejo who was selling marijuana along with bracelets, necklaces and other assorted souvenirs. The investigators were responding to anonymous complaints from neighbors that drugs were being sold openly at the market, which is on the main road in downtown Puerto Viejo. On Friday, the agents made 5 drug purchases and then arrested ...
It seems that buyers have been plunking down large sums of money on the internet to buy lots in what appears to be a non-existent subdivision development in the Margarita-Sixaola area.
Caribe Sur Real Estate has received visits from a number of people who have visited their offices looking for assistance in locating the property they’ve bought. The Puerto Viejo Real Estate page has a list of local agencies and developers. The area and the lifestyle is also not for everyone. So don't rush into buying. There are many affordable rentals where you could spend 6 months or more ...
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca (not to be confused with Puerto Viejo de Sarapiquí in the northern lowlands) is a decidedly Caribbean concoction of perfect beaches, spectacular surfing and laid-back attitude, spiced up with the most happening music, nightlife and restaurant scene on the coast. It’s touristy – and more and more expats are moving here every year. But if you can let go of getting in touch with ‘the real Costa Rica’ for a moment, you’ll have a blast.

As throughout the southern Caribbean coast, the Afro-Caribbean presence is strong here: locals sometimes refer to the town by its patois name ‘Walaba,’ and coconut-scented odors and reggae music emanate from the doorways. With the influx of foreigners, however, you might hear German or French on the streets sooner than patois. Puerto Viejo’s kitchens are now turning out fantastic fusion cuisine, incorporating influences
Wanting a different vibe kind of honeymoon in Costa Rica? Check out Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica.

Even though Costa Rica is a small country, you would spot exemplary vacation destinations here. Not to mention the Southern Caribbean Coast that became the heart and soul of the Caribbean coast. It was then connected to the country after making a way going to Puerto Limon. It is one of the last regions to be part of the country and still has its traditional native population, the Afro-Caribbean community and Jamaican descendents. Along with spicy Caribbean dishes, reggae and calypso music all over the town, you would also experience meeting Indian tribes who have been in the region hundred of years ago. In addition, you’ll get mixed up with the Spanish-English dialect that they are using, but still English is their local language. It’s like having two countries in one
Alto Katsi is a small, remote community in the mountains of Talamanca, Costa Rica. There are about 16 houses and approximately 80 people. I had the pleasure and priveledge of visiting this community with another volunteer, Chiara Nardi, during the early part of May.

The purpose for the trip was to disperse medicines and vitamins to animals. I had been given a donation by family friends to spend during my internship here and chose to spend part towards animals after speaking with a few people here about how it could best be used. In communities such as Alto Katsi, where people and their animals live in close proximity, animal health is important. Healthy animals mean healthy people.

So, the supplies were collected at the vetrinarian in Bribri, our bags were packed and off we went…let the adventure begin! ...

You would never know there was a recession in Puerto Viejo with the number of projects currently underway. And on top of all the building, they are finally making progress in fixing the roads. Rumor has it that they are hoping to complete the pavment between Hone Creek and Puerto Viejo with final black top in September and October, as that is when there is the least chance of rain.

Today was the opening of the new Palí in Hone Creek. They are ..
A number of people have commented that the forum has disappeared from Puerto Viejo Satellite and they missed it. Sorry to all you fans but I had to remove it.

The forum unfortunately kept getting attacked by spammers and the forum software made it very laborious to delete these spammers. I tried making it harder to register and then people had trouble getting registered but the spammers still found their way through. So with all the hassles…that was the end of it.
A party on the beach in the early hours of Wednesday morning ended in one man dead.
Deciding to get the last word in an argument which had been ongoing, a man identified by last name Mitchel went home for a firearm and shot his rival.

The victim is 20 year old Carlos Navarro, known locally as Rulos. He was shot six times at close range, twice in the head, twice in the chest and twice in the arms. The authorities arrested Mitchell several hours later.
Anyone been here to spend a weekend? in late June? We're thinking of leaving San Jose on a Saturday morning...staying just two nights. Possibly Cariblue Hotel. Mom, Dad, teenage daughter...like walking on the beach, birding, interesting wildlife, good scenery, good food. Can just chill and read good books too.

I really recommend going towards Manzanillo, you can rent bikes, the road is lovely and calm. The earlier you leave the more of wildlife spottings you'll have.Oh yeah, we love riding bikes to Manzanillo and Puerto Viejo both. Just ride with a partner and I'd avoid it at night. We found Azania a good location to walk up the road to Totem Restaurant which was quite good--Italian, I think. Also, La Pecora Nera is excellent--also Italiano.
Unless things have greatly improved, last time I was there, it was Dial Up and the electricity was spotty, as its located at the end of the electic grid/phone grid, that was 2005. Laptops are a target for theft as well.

There are internet cafes but the service is slowwwwwwww. This is a party place and can be a tad nuts and a young euro backpacker, and Pt Viejo is a rather dodgy place at night and a heavy element of drug users are commiting random acts of violence and robbery against male tourist....no reports lately, but just so you have been warned, get the lowdown on rules of safety once there, and head the advice. Desolate beaches and roads are a risk on that coast.

just spoke with a buddy of mine who was in PV this past March and was robbed at knifepoint early in the morning on the road outside the hostel. He didn't have his wallet with him and just lost so
