After getting off the boat from Tortuguero we jumped in Wesley and made our way over to the East coast and South to Puerto Viejo. We pulled into Puerto Viejo pretty late at night and found a great little place to camp on the beach next to a hostel. That night we went out for pizza and some amazing fruit shakes before tucking in for the night.
The next day we got up early and did a little shopping in town. We had a few presents to pick up and had a nice time exploring the roadside stands. After Devin did a little work we headed to the beach for some swimming and sun. The beach was beautiful with clear water and many palm trees dotting the beach. Following the bright sunshine we took a little walk down the beach to Rocking J's. Rocking J’s is an intriguing hostel that has mosaics everywhere and was definitely designed with an artist eye. Before going to Costa Rica, I was searching for a new life experience. I thought that maybe volunteering for people in need would help me to reach this objective. I couldn’t make up my mind right away and spent a lot of time thinking about the destination and what kind of volunteering I wanted to do. This is an important point to consider. You cannot decide any random volunteer abroad program online without having a specific goal. Choosing Costa Rica met my goals of wanting to discover a new culture, a new language and the natural beauty of the country.
Once I made up my mind on the destination, I had to find an organized program that met my expectations. I chose a non-profit organization rather than a ‘voluncation’ travel agency because I thought they would be closer to the local people

I dunno who wrote the two reviews above, but I'm gonna differ strongly. We stayed in Cahuita and Punta Uva (south of Puerto Viejo about 15 minutes) in January and found an array of very pretty quite clean beaches. No hassling vendors....the occasional dog (I never saw the "packs of stray dogs". Dark sand north of PV, pale sand farther south and up around Cahuita. the only place I saw much of any trash on the beach is north of Cahuita where driftwood has washed up in piles, but the beach itself was lovely, dark sand, we were there on a sunday "family" day and it was packed with kids, then on monday it was almost abandoned. We only got in the water in cahuita, Punta Uva, Manzanillo and playa chocles and found them all to be easy in and out and not a lot of pulling current. The surf beaches are certainly not for snorkeling or water play but the beaches are still nice.

Alto Katsi is a small, remote community in the mountains of Talamanca, Costa Rica. There are about 16 houses and approximately 80 people. I had the pleasure and priveledge of visiting this community with another volunteer, Chiara Nardi, during the early part of May.
The purpose for the trip was to disperse medicines and vitamins to animals. I had been given a donation by family friends to spend during my internship here and chose to spend part towards animals after speaking with a few people here about how it could best be used. In communities such as Alto Katsi, where people and their animals live in close proximity, animal health is important. Healthy animals mean healthy people.
So, the supplies were collected at the vetrinarian in Bribri, our bags were packed and off we went…let the adventure begin! ...

We started construction only two weeks ago on the kitchen and office - which are being topped off this week- an incredible speed for a caribbean beach town. We drove to the port city of Puerto Limon friday to get some tiles at El Mundo de la Ceramica (world of tiles) and found the tile for the kitchen and bathrooms. They had every tacky tile you have ever seen in the world and of course with the perfect boarder to boot! Yes, here is where you find what will not sell anywhere else. Well after the salesman showed us the "BEST" we wondered through every stack and pile and found some pretty interesting stuff, for the floors some large tiles that look like concrete and the kitchen walls a off white with satin finish and for the bathroom walls a tile that kinda looks like bamboo streaks in a very light off green tint, it all came together pretty nice and we all felt the satisfying feeling of

You would never know there was a recession in Puerto Viejo with the number of projects currently underway. And on top of all the building, they are finally making progress in fixing the roads. Anyone been here to spend a weekend? in late June? We're thinking of leaving San Jose on a Saturday morning...staying just two nights. Possibly Cariblue Hotel. Mom, Dad, teenage daughter...like walking on the beach, birding, interesting wildlife, good scenery, good food. Can just chill and read good books too.
I really recommend going towards Manzanillo, you can rent bikes, the road is lovely and calm. The earlier you leave the more of wildlife spottings you'll have.Oh yeah, we love riding bikes to Manzanillo and Puerto Viejo both. Just ride with a partner and I'd avoid it at night. We found Azania a good location to walk up the road to Totem Restaurant which was quite good--Italian, I think. Also, La Pecora Nera is excellent--also Italiano.
