The Pacific here is turquoise and in direct contrast to the Caribbean side of Costa Rica where the sea seemed a lot rougher and not so blue. The beaches around here are very beautiful and from a boat you have the opportunity to see them fully with their volcanic cliffs rising steeply from the shoreline....
Cahuita and the Limon province of Costa Rica, have a special flavor to them. The Caribbean area offers a natural and cultural environment that is completely different from the rest of the country. Coconut trees leaning towards the ocean, spectacular reefs, the sounds of Bob Marley and Alpha Blondie, and tourists wearing dreadlocks and Birkenstocks abound in this area. Even if you’re not the Rasta type, you shouldn’t miss out on the natural beauty of the forest and reefs of Cahuita.
Just wondering if anyone has tried this diving and snorkeling tour on the Caribbean coast near the Panama border?

Is there any chance of not just watching the dolphins, but actually getting out of the boat and snorkeling or diving with them? Found it on website of Isla Inn in Cahuita:

Dolphin watching and snorkeling. Take a beautiful ride along the coast past Manzanillo deep into the Gandoca National park. Near the Panamanian border, atlantic and bottlenose dolphins come in to feed in the brackish waters near the Sixaola river. After seeing the dolphins, we cruise back to Mona island for snorkelling and/or diving! Then we continue back up the coast to Punta Uva for our second dive and second snorkelling site.
It is a bit of apples to oranges as they are definitely different places. Puerto Viejo is less developed and would would be ideal for more adventurous type travelers who are looking to really experience tropical jungle/beach type of environment.

Accommodation on Caribbean side tends to be a bit more rustic and less North Americanized, For some that is great... But for others, that is a total drawback. As for cultures, the Caribbean has quite a bit more diversity in types of people that live there then Manuel Antonio.

As far as beaches go... Caribbean is basically one long beach which stretches from Panama to Nicaragua. The beaches south of Puerto Viejo tend to be most popular with their whiter sand colour.
If you looking for a total "sun vacation", Puerto Viejo or Caribbean side would not be for you. Then again, you might rethink Costa Rica as your choice
Trying to give you any advice based on the weather during the month of August is hard...very hard...
My little ones love Manuel Antonio...but also love the low profile of the beaches around Puerto Viejo, Punta Uva, Cocles, Manzanillo...Peace Lodge is partially open...Simple answer I will rather go to Caribbean side...Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in PARADISE!

You know, I just went with my son to Cahuita a little while ago. He's 5 and we found a bunch of things to do that he loved. They have the sloth center, a huge hit for kids. Amazing beaches, and since it's their drier season, you might have a lot less rain and more fun time at the beach....
Hello all, Iv'e visited the Pacific coast of C.R. for several yrs. & would like to sample the Caribean side - Could anyone provide me w/ an overview of the Caribean flavor ?? A nice day at the Caribbean in Costa Rica...is a dream...nice clear water...nice white sand beach...green forest close to you...howlers screaming like crazy...what else can you ask!

But do some homework...the area is not for every body...if you expect to have a beach boy providing you a towel...or offering you a Pina Colada at the beach...Puerto Viejo and other beaches around are possible not for you!

Just buckle up and enjoy the ride in PARADISE!
