As the howls of spider monkeys echoed around our forested cabin, I tried to open my eyes – only to find that they were crusted shut. “This is not good,” I called out to Don, who was doing a scorpion check of the bathroom. In my opinion, you will on the Caribbean side, find the best beaches just south of Puerto Viejo. Hiking, surfing and snorkelling are great depending on when you are planning to go.
The Puerto Viejo area is a funny and very relaxed mix of backpackers and more luxury orientated tourists and has a lot of marvellous places to stay and good restaurants.
You may look into a combination of Arenal volcano and Tortuguero and Puerto Viejo.

Try to fit in Arenal-so much to see and do there. We drove from Playa Cocles area-little south of PV-so can do the drive. Drive took around 5-6 hrs. but stopped for gas in Limon and picture taking. Roads not bad so if no construction delays and not a lot of stopping along the way, it's perfectly doable and you will see beautiful scenery and nice, little towns and can do in less time than we took.
