(Photo) This is an Ungaliophis panamensis that was found near cocles, Costa Rica. According to published reports there were only a few documented sitings of this animal in Costa Rica, although the locals I talked to seemed to have seen them before, so not sure how rare they are in the country. This is one of the species we are negotiating with the government to work with. you can learn more about our project at:

Totem hotel or Azania (Puerto Viejo)

I stayed at Totem in late March and really enjoyed it. My choice had come down to Totem or Azania or Cariblue. I went with Totem primarily because of the sea/beach view. Azania and Cariblue are very close to the beach, but no view of the water. The view and sound of the crashing waves from the 2nd floor beach suite was fantastic. Decent rooms, very big, good food and nice people. One of my great memories of the trip is the morning breakfast, not so much for the food (although it was ok to good) but more for the fact I could grab a coffee in the restaurant and wander across the road to stand on the deserted beach. Nice way to slowly wake up. Stayed at Azania a year ago... my wife and I and another couple loved it. It had a decent, attractive pretty pool and great simple but fresh breakfasts (fruit, eggs, etc). It is a jungle setting and a 2 minute walk to Cocles Beach (same beach as Tot
Alto Katsi in the mountains of Talamanca Costa Rica

Alto Katsi is a small, remote community in the mountains of Talamanca, Costa Rica. There are about 16 houses and approximately 80 people. I had the pleasure and priveledge of visiting this community with another volunteer, Chiara Nardi, during the early part of May.
The purpose for the trip was to disperse medicines and vitamins to animals. I had been given a donation by family friends to spend during my internship here and chose to spend part towards animals after speaking with a few people here about how it could best be used. In communities such as Alto Katsi, where people and their animals live in close proximity, animal health is important. Healthy animals mean healthy people.
So, the supplies were collected at the vetrinarian in Bribri, our bags were packed and off we went…let the adventure begin! ...

If you are looking for gifts, books of all sorts, respite from jungle heat, and a bite of the best homemade chocolate truffles around, consider a visit to Echo Books. The store features books of all types, including guide books and books in languages other than English. There is an interesting collection of gifts to bring home. And the place is air conditioned -- which gives a very welcome and unexpected feeling of "cool". The owner is an expert chocolate maker. She and her partner serve great local coffee. Don't leave Puerto Viejo without making a visit to this unique shop. You'll be delighted....

Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica If you Plan on going to Costa Rica .. this is a really great place to Stay...While Iani distracted the snake .. by capturing it .. I courageously took photos from a distance.. Afterwards she chased me around the house with the snake .. I was screaming like a little girl and making threats not to cook or wash her clothes anymore .. nly in Costa Rica can a 4 foot snake fall out of a tree and not make it all the way to the ground because it got caught in a beefy spider web...Iani found Eric-Alfred in the shower .. she thought about putting him outside because he looked undernourished.. but decided that he was a domesticated frog and probably lost his ability to survive in the wild...
Costa Rica's Caribbean Coast

Once upon a time… long before pillow menus and linens with thread counts were of any importance to me, I lived here… the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. 6 glorious months without a care in the world in a place trapped in time. I was here 12 years ago, before the digital camera age so I don’t have many of my own photos to share. Recently, I found a wonderful company and creators of a DVD of images from the coast… each one straight from my own memories. Enjoy these images below and check out Pura Vida DVD for more! The End! All photos from Puerto Viejo, Costa Rica. (16 Photos)...

Costa Rica Surf Safety Tips

Few places in the world can offer travelers volcanoes towering up to 12,530 feet and a seemingly endless 700 miles of coastline on the Pacific and Caribbean like Costa Rica can. Though Costa Rica is known for many of its great tourism specialties there is one that should never be overlooked: surfing.
There are also cool surf towns popping up in Jaco, Tamarindo and Puerto Viejo. The best waves occur in the rainy season (Northern Hemisphere 'summer') on the pacific side, and in the hot dry season ('winter') on the Caribbean – so you’ll always be able to find a good break.
Why is Costa Rica called 'The Hawaii of the Central America"? Costa Rica's appeal is easy to understand: Consistent surf year-round, Warm water, Easy access to thousands of breaks, Surf conditions from mild to mind-blowing, Surf camps and international tournaments, Affordable prices...

Our Volunteer / Work-Exchange Program at Global Creek – a new leading ecological centre in the heart of the Caribbean – is growing again, expanding to meet the interest and popularity it has been experiencing.
More space and liberties for our volunteers and a higher level of accommodation, now occupying potentially the entire retreat space. More tours, trips, learning and exploration outings will now take place, visiting farms, communities, reservations, beaches, waterfalls and local sights. A greater connection to the community, with time dedicated weekly to helping-out with other local causes and efforts. Costa Rica Puerto Viejo A Favorite Among Travelers

Clear water, coconut palms, great surf and a laidback Caribbean atmosphere make Puerto Viejo a favorite among travelers. Located on the Caribbean Coast, about an hour south of Limon, Puerto Viejo is the center of activity between the smaller villages of Cahuita and Manzanillo. The relaxed, seaside town is framed by jungle, turquoise seas, banana plantations and scenic rivers.
Formerly a small fishing village, Puerto Viejo has grown rapidly in recent years. Avid surfers, drawn to the famous Salsa Brava waves, have made Puerto Viejo a hotspot on the surfing circuit. The center of town now boasts many souvenir and surf shops, bars, restaurants, hotels and tour companies. True to its beach location and Caribbean ambiance, bikes and pedestrians dominate road traffic along the coastal roads.

We traveled with our host "mom" Flor and a friend of hers by bus over the mountain range and down to the coast, the bus trip took about 5 hours with no bathroom break or a/c, in true Costa Rican style. Aram did surprisingly well.
One of the things that continues to amaze us about this country is how incredibly diverse the ecology and culture is in such a small geographic region. Most of the mountains we've passed through in the past have been heavily terraced and filled with agriculture. The mountains to the south-west of San Jose are instead totally forested. The coast has a significantly different ethnographic makeup, having been settled by people

The beginning of this adventure in Puerto Viejo

So my first night in PV was somewhat restless.....it is hot here. I had been traveling for nearly two days, and well, my accommodations are exactly what I paid for, LOL. My room has two twin beds, ceiling fan amd a mosquito net. Really the only problem I had was that the pillow smelled SO BAD, as did the scratchy towels - like mildew - that I couldn't use them. It has since been rememdied, but it was not a good start to my trip herre after traveling so far and long. One thing I did enjoy during my night of restlessness, was lightening and rolling thunder off in the distance, mixed in with the night time jungle sounds. I have no idea what animal was making what sounds either. But it was very....primitive. And really neat.
As usual for me when I travel, the first night I...
