Anyway. We left San Jose in high spirits, excited about the onward journey to a teeny Caribbean town called Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. The bus ride was about 4 hours long and it took us through the mountains that run down the middle of Costa Rica. The next day me and some other people from the group got a bus to another little village called Manzanillo, and spent the day hiking through the jungle there. Our guide was a massive Rasta called Ricky. He grew up in puerto Viejo and knows everything about everything in the jungle - he made a splint and a sling out of a banana plant! I saw various animals, including a fucking massive jumping spider. I didnt like that.
So we left Puerto Viejo, to make our way to Tortuguero - the only way to get there is by a 3 hour boat ride. During the boat ride, we saw the most amazing animals - Caiman, Spider Monkeys, Whit

I found out yesterday that I am actually getting picked up by my Scout conference organizers on Sunday, not Monday like I had thought/planned, so today was really my only day for any sight-seeing in Costa Rica. I'm very happy with the one day I had, though! I think I saw everything I came to this country to see! Through my hostel, I booked a tour with Tom's Jungle Safari to Tortuguera National Park. At the time, I had no idea what or where that park was. I just went up to the front desk and said "I want to go into the jungle. What do you recommend?" and they pointed me in this direction. Turns out, Tortuguera is supposed to be the most remote part of Costa Rica. It is only accessible by boat and contains the one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites in the

Costa Rica is the greenest and happiest country in the world, according to a new list that ranks nations by combining measures of their ecological footprint with the happiness of their citizens.
Costa Ricans top the list because they report the highest life satisfaction in the world, they live slightly longer than Americans, yet have an ecological footprint that is less than a quarter the size. The country only narrowly fails to achieve the goal of what NEF calls "one-planet living": consuming its fair share of the Earth's natural resources....

Spotlight on Costa Ricas Southern Caribbean Coast

Costa Rica's southern Caribbean coast was one of the last regions to become connected to the rest of the country. It was only in 1987 that the first paved road linked the regional capital of Limon to San Jose meaning that for most of the country's history, the Afro-Caribbean east coast communities developed in almost complete isolation from the rest of Hispanic Costa Rica. Despite recent investments in roads and transport services, Costa Rica's Caribbean coast still feels separate and distant, almost like having two countries rolled into one.But there's a lot more to Puerto Viejo than music, partying and surfing. A slight detour to Punto Uva brought me out onto an almost deserted beach where white sands met turquoise blue water: a beach scene that was almost too cliched to believe.

On the Caribbean coast, especially south of Limón, you can count on rain year-round, although this area gets less rain in September and October than the rest of the country. I love the Rain
Seriously, there isn’t anything more relaxing then listening to the rain. In my post “Why Costa Rica” I spoke about how the weather here is 75 degrees every month on average. There is also two seasons, “dry season” and “green season“. Where I live, close to Heredia, the weather is pretty nice and 75 is about right. By the beaches it can get really hot and that is why I like it here better.
During the rain season, or green season, you can expect to have a beautiful sunny morning until around noon time and then the clouds roll in and there are few storms. At about 8 or 9pm the rain is gone and we start all over ...

So this was to be home for the next 6 weeks, or so I had originally planned! The camp is set amongst trees of Banana, Papaya, Avocado Limes and I would have previously put here Pineapple, but I have since learned that Pineapples grow from the ground. Although the readiness of these fruits are scarce, most have been over picked they still all add to the tropical atmosphere. The Atlantic Ocean fronting the camp is known for fierce rip tides and high swells, unfortunately that all means that the black, volcanic sand beach is littered from the jungle to the shore line in drift wood, and occasional whole Palm Trees that had been swept from a distant island somewhere in the Caribbean.
It sounds like Paradise, a wild beautiful beach surrounded by rainforest and natural canals, and a pristine environment with no cars, machinery or pollution. But I suprised myself by not feeling

Costa Rica is a small Central American country bordering the countries of Nicaragua and Panama. It is often considered to be a tropical paradise. In 1502, Christopher Columbus landed along its Caribbean coast and was so mesmerized he named the place ‘Costa Rica’, the ‘Rich Coast’. The name stuck.

hi.i plan to arrive san jose with my wife for 5 nights on july 1. i want to rent a 4x4 and drive to various places. can you recommend a trip for me? want to see both forests and beaches in this short time.
If you are to stay in CR only 5 nights, you may wanna check the South Caribbean Coast. There you can find very nice beaches (Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva, Manzanillo, Punta Cocles) and very ancient forests. You can get a guided jungle tour (daytime or at night) in Reserva Natural La Ceiba. The trees you will observe there are amazing.
We did it last week and felt very happy after de trek. we repeat at night ot see amphibians and the sounds of the jungle at night (different than during the day). All the package were arranged by the couple managing La Kukula Lodge, a brand new ecolodge in Playa Chiquita.

Hello all, Iv'e visited the Pacific coast of C.R. for several yrs. & would like to sample the Caribean side - Could anyone provide me w/ an overview of the Caribean flavor ?? A nice day at the Caribbean in Costa Rica...is a dream...nice clear water...nice white sand beach...green forest close to you...howlers screaming like crazy...what else can you ask!
But do some homework...the area is not for every body...if you expect to have a beach boy providing you a towel...or offering you a Pina Colada at the beach...Puerto Viejo and other beaches around are possible not for you!
